Medical and Dental Emergencies in Remote Parts of Scotland

It goes without saying that if ever a medical or dental emergency were to arise in Scotland, it would be far easier to find dentists in Edinburgh, rather than in the more remote parts of the country. However, it is important to bear in mind that this exact eventuality can happen, so knowing what to do in advance could be beneficial.

Some parts of Scotland are definitely the most remote in the whole of the UK. Whether you are on one of the Western Isles, or in the wilderness that is the Highlands of Scotland, if an emergency were to crop up during your travels, the first rule must be for you not to panic.

You will need to locate a usable phone as soon as you possibly can. Mobile phones may not work in the most remote parts of Scotland, so do not think that by taking one with you, you will be completely protected.

Once you have managed to find a working phone, you should get the number for the nearest medical emergency. If there has been a serious accident - obviously you will need to call 999. If we are talking about a dental emergency, you will need to find out where the nearest dental surgery is located and try to find out if they deal with out of hour emergencies. If the dental surgery does not handle out of hours emergencies, they should be able to tell you where any treatment can be sought.

Despite the fact that some parts of Scotland can prove to be the most cut-off areas of the country, remember that this is still the UK: one of the top 5 developed countries in the whole world and any form of medical emergency treatment should never be too far away.
